PSM I vs. PSPO I: Which Certification First?
You want to get certified by Scrum.org but don't know whether PSM I or PSPO I is the right choice? Both exams share the same format but test different perspectives on Scrum. Here's the comparison.
The shared foundation
First the good news: both exams are based on the Scrum Guide 2020 and share the same structure:
- 80 questions in 60 minutes
- 85% passing score
- Single choice, multiple choice, and true/false
- $200 per attempt, valid for life
So if you prepare for one of the two exams, you automatically learn a large part of the other's material. That's exactly why the bundle is worth it for many people.
PSM I: The Scrum Master perspective
The Professional Scrum Master I is aimed at everyone who wants to establish and live Scrum in a team — classically aspiring Scrum Masters, but also developers, Agile Coaches, and team leads.
The focus is on:
- The Scrum framework as a whole: events, artifacts, accountabilities
- The role of the Scrum Master as a servant leader
- Empiricism, Scrum values, and self-management
- Dealing with typical team and organizational situations
The PSM I is the most in-demand Scrum certification in job postings. If you only take one and want to work in an agile environment in general, it is the safest starting point.
PSPO I: The Product Owner perspective
The Professional Scrum Product Owner I is aimed at everyone responsible for the value of the product: Product Owners, product managers, business analysts, and founders.
The focus is on:
- Value maximization and the accountability of the Product Owner
- Product Backlog management: ordering, refining, making transparent
- The Product Goal as the commitment of the Product Backlog
- Collaboration with stakeholders and handling requirements
The PSPO I is less often explicitly required in job postings, but it is a strong signal in product environments — especially because many Product Owners have never formally learned their role.
Which one should you take first?
Our recommendation in short:
- You want to be (or are) a Scrum Master: start with the PSM I.
- You are moving toward product management: start with the PSPO I.
- You want both or are unsure: begin with the PSM I — it lays the broadest foundation — and follow up with the PSPO I right away while the material is fresh.
The overlap is high: once you have passed the PSM I, you typically prepare for the PSPO I in half the time.
Conclusion
You can't go wrong with either certification — both are valid for life and internationally recognized. What matters is that you don't take them lightly: 85% on 80 questions in 60 minutes demands real preparation.
